San Francisco, the smallest county in California, is the only consolidated city-county in the state. With a population of 852,469 and an area slightly less than 47 square miles, it is the most densely populated large city in California, and the second most densely populated in the U.S. after New York City. You can also obtain public records in person; the staff of the Office of the Assessor-Recorder will assist you when you visit the office. You will be required to fill out the records request form indicating the kind of records that you are requesting. In addition, you can conduct your own search by using one of the county recorder’s computer terminals and the microfiche and microfilm.
