City and County of San Francisco, California

San Francisco, the smallest county in California, is the only consolidated city-county in the state. With a population of 852,469 and an area slightly less than 47 square miles, it is the most densely populated large city in California, and the second most densely populated in the U.S. after New York City. San Francisco is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Chinatown, and cable cars.

The City and County of San Francico are served by an Assessor-Recorder. The core responsibilities of the Assessor-Recorder are to:

  • Conduct fair and efficient assessments.
  • Establish a taxable value for all property subject to property taxation.
  • Maintain public records.
  • Locate all taxable property in the County and identify the ownership.
  • Collect City revenues from the recording of legal documents.
  • List the value of all property on the assessment roll.
  • Apply all legal exemptions.
  • Improve Customer Services and Technology.
  • Ensure equality in all assessments.

To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the San Francisco, City and County Recorder’s Website. When doing  a search, you have the option of searching by the type of document, document number, document name, or Assessor’s Parcel Number(s) (APN), which is also known as Assessor’s Block & Lot numbers. The website is also an important source of public information regarding the Assessor-Recorder’s office.

You can also obtain public records in person; the staff of the Office of the Assessor-Recorder will assist you when you visit the office. You will be required to fill out the records request form indicating the kind of records that you are requesting. In addition, you can conduct your own search by using one of the county recorder’s computer terminals and the microfiche and microfilm.
