Court case files are public records and subject to public inspection. It is important to note, however, that the majority of online services only provide the case number and location. After locating the case number and court location, there are a number of ways to obtain a copy of a court record. These include online, in person, or by mailing a request.
To obtain court records in person, you will have to go to the courthouse where the file is located. You will not be served if you make a request less than 30 minutes from closing time. In addition, a picture identification card must be presented to view case files. Provide the court staff at the counter with the case number, and the request will be processed in minutes. However, some requests may require a minimum of two court days to process; in such cases, the court staff will contact you when your copy request has been completed, or you will be given a pick-up date at the time of your request. When you order copies from microfiche/microfilm or file, you will be charged 50¢ per page.
To request information by mail, send a letter to the court facility where the case was tried with the following information:
- The case number
- The names of the parties involved
- The names of the documents that you want to have copied from the court file
Copy requests received by mail may take several weeks to process. Visit schedule of fees to view the fee applicable when requesting court records via mail.
