Merced County is a county located in the state of California. The county was formed in April 19, 1855. Named after the Merced River, originally El Río de Nuestra Señora de la Merced (“River of Our Lady of Mercy” in Spanish), the county seat is Merced and it has a population of 263228 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 1979 square miles, with its land area encompassing 1935 square miles, and its water area 44 square miles. The county consists of 23 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 93635 recorded as the one with the largest population. Merced County Clerk Information

The Recorder’s Office is responsible for the following:

  • Recording, indexing, and filing legal documents such as property transfer records, financial statements, liens, deeds, certificates of discharge, maps, notices, marriages, births, and death certificates
  • Examining all documents for compliance with laws for recording
  • Computing and collecting filing fees, micrographic fees, and documentary transfer taxes
  • Certifying copies of records and general information and furnishing this information to the public for State-prescribed fees

The Clerk’s Office is responsible for the following:

  • Marriages
  • Passport applications
  • Fictitious Business Names (FBNs)
  • Notary Public Registrations

The following information must be provided in order to obtain copies of recorded documents:

  • Type of document
  • The document number (book and page number if document has one)
  • The recording year
  • Name of at least one of the parties named in the document
  • Name and address of the person or agency to whom the copies are to be returned

The fees for certified copies of vital records vary depending on the record needed and these fees are nonrefundable. If a record is not found, a Certificate of No Record will be issued. For orders by mail, you may pay by cash or money order made payable to Merced County Recorder. A third-party website, VitalChek, can also be used to order these vital records.
A Grantor/Grantee index is available for online searches of property documents recorded since 1963. Official records filed prior to 1963 must be searched in person in the office. These document are public records and are available in the Clerk-Recorder’s office during normal business hours. Documents may be viewed free of charge or copied at a cost.
