Merced County is a county located in the state of California. The county was formed in April 19, 1855. Named after the Merced River, originally El Río de Nuestra Señora de la Merced (“River of Our Lady of Mercy” in Spanish), the county seat is Merced and it has a population of 263228 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 1979 square miles, with its land area encompassing 1935 square miles, and its water area 44 square miles.
