Mariposa County is a county located in the state of California. The county was formed in February 18, 1850. Named after the Spanish word for “butterfly” and Mariposa Creek, the county seat is Mariposa and it has a population of 17755 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 1463 square miles, with its land area encompassing 1449 square miles, and its water area 14 square miles. Moreover, Mariposa County borders the following counties: Tuolumne County, CA to the north; Merced County, CA to the west; Stanislaus County, CA to the northwest, and; Madera County, CA to the southeast.

The Assessor is annually responsible for discovering and assessing all taxable real and personal property located in the county, and for determining eligibility for various property tax exemptions and exclusions. The Recorder maintains various land and finance documents for Mariposa County.
