Los Angeles County is in the state of California; the county was organized as one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. The county seat is the city of Los Angeles. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of 9,818,605 and a total area of 4,751 square miles. This makes Los Angeles the most populous county in the United States; the county alone is more populous than 43 individual U.S. states. The county clerk is responsible for all county records; some of the records maintained by the department include–but are not limited to–marriage records, divorce records, birth records and death records. All records are open for public view with the exception of military discharges. The county has made it simple for resident to access county record; public records can be accessed by visiting the department in person or by searching the records online.
For birth, death, or marriage records, only certain people are allowed to obtain an authorized certified copy. Authorized certified copies of birth records are required when obtaining social security cards, passports, driver’s licenses, and other services related to an individual’s identity.
The following can obtain an authorized certified copy of a birth record:
- The registrant, or a parent or legal guardian of the registrant
- A child, sibling, grandchild, grandparent, spouse, or domestic partner of the registrant
- A licensed adoption agency seeking the birth record in order to comply with the requirements of Section 3140, a party entitled to receive the record as a result of a court order, or an attorney
- A member of a law enforcement agency, as provided by law, who is conducting official business.
