Yell County, Arkansas Overview

Yell County is a county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,185. The county has two county seats, Dardanelle and Danville, which is also the largest community. Yell County is Arkansas’s 42nd county, formed on December 5, 1840 from portions of Scott and Pope counties. It was named after Archibald Yell, who was the state’s first member of the United States House of Representatives and the second governor of Arkansas; he later was killed in combat at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War. It is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 949 square miles, of which 930 square miles is land and 19 square miles is water. Yell County is partially home to three nationally protected areas, Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge, Ouachita National Forest, and Ozark National Forest. Seven Arkansas counties surround Yell County, and they are Pope to the north, Conway to the northeast, Perry to the east, Garland to the southeast, Montgomery to the south, Scott to the west, and Logan to the northwest. The County Clerk is responsible for the daily operations of the County Clerk Office, Quorum Court Secretary, Budget Account Figures, and delegating the responsibilities of the office. The County Clerk Chief Deputy is responsible for the daily payment of county invoices, in charge of the county probate files, in charge of tax work, Equalization Board Secretary, and assisting at the counter with marriage licenses. The County Clerk Deputy is responsible for all county payroll procedures and all voter registration records and assists at the counter with marriage licenses.

The Circuit Clerk is the clerk of the circuit, domestic relations, and juvenile court and usually acts as the ex-officio recorder of the county. The Circuit Clerks office prepares summons, warrants, orders, judgments, and injunctions authorized by the circuit court for delivery by the county sheriff. This office also maintains a file of all cases pending in either court, as well as a record of all past court cases and their disposition. Also, the circuit clerk keeps a list of all prospective jurors. The Chief Deputy helps maintain the records of all proceedings of the circuit courts and to prepare the dockets for these courts. In addition, the clerk keeps a list of all prospective jurors. The Deputy Clerk is responsible for recording deeds, mortgages, liens and surety bonds, and many other orders and instruments which involve property within the county.
