Mississippi County, Arkansas Overview

Mississippi County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 46,480. There are two county seats, Blytheville and Osceola. Blytheville is the largest community. The county was formed on November 1, 1833, and named for the Mississippi River which borders the county to the east. Mississippi County is part of the First Congressional District in Arkansas. The Blytheville, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Mississippi County. Jefferson W. Speck, a Mississippi County planter, was the Republican gubernatorial nominee in 1950 and 1952. Mississippi County is a total of 920 square miles, 901 is land and the remaining 19 is water. Mississippi is bordered by two Missouri counties, Dunklin to the northwest, and Pemiscot to the north. To the northeast, east and southeast lies three Tennessee counties, Dyer, Lauderdale and Tipton, respectively. Add to that three Arkansas neighbors, Crittenden to the south, Poinsett to the southwest and Craighead to the west. The county is also home to the nationally protected Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Although 72315 is the largest zip code in the county, there are 15 additional zip codes used in the area.

The County Clerk is responsible for the daily operations of the County Clerk Office, Quorum Court Secretary, Budget Account Figures, and delegating the responsibilities of the office. The County Clerk Chief Deputy is responsible for the daily payment of county invoices, in charge of the county probate files, in charge of tax work, Equalization Board Secretary, and assisting at the counter with marriage licenses. The Circuit Clerk is the clerk of the circuit, domestic relations, and juvenile court and usually acts as the ex-officio recorder of the county. The Circuit Clerks office prepares summons, warrants, orders, judgments, and injunctions authorized by the circuit court for delivery by the county sheriff. This office also maintains a file of all cases pending in either court, as well as a record of all past court cases and their disposition. In addition, the circuit clerk keeps a list of all prospective jurors.
