Dallas County, Arkansas Overview

Located in the state of Arkansas, Dallas County has a population of about 8,116, according to the US Census Bureau. The low population makes Dallas the fourth-least populous county in Arkansas. The county seat, and largest community is Fordyce. Dallas County is Arkansas’s 49th county, formed on January 1, 1845, and named for George M. Dallas, Vice President of the United States. The total square miles of the county are 668, 667 of that is land, and the remaining .7 square miles is water. The county has six neighboring counties in Arkansas: to the northeast, Grant, Cleveland is to the east, Calhoun to the southeast, Ouachita to the southwest, Clark to the west and Hot Spring to the northwest. Mollie Burdett Banks Curry Gray (1862-1958), a native of Tulip in Dallas County, was a great-great-grand-niece of George Washington. When she died in 1958 in Shreveport, Louisiana, she was listed as the oldest descendant of President Washington. Mollie’s first husband, Robert Houston Curry, was from 1888 to 1892 a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from Bossier Parish.     Ms. Barnes is also the Circuit Clerk, and her primary duties of the Circuit Court Clerk office revolve around filing, docketing, attending court, issuing of notices, records management, and reporting to the Administrative Office of the Courts. It is the responsibility of the Circuit Clerk to prepare a list of prospective jurors, docket cases of the respective courts, issue summonses, subpoenas, writs and warrants related to each case, attend court and swear witnesses. The Clerk maintains the records of the civil, criminal and Juvenile divisions of the Courts and prepares transcripts of proceedings under appeal. The records of the Circuit Courts are the evidence of their official acts and, therefore, it is necessary that they be accurately recorded and well maintained.
