Crittenden County, Arkansas Overview

Located in the state of Arkansas, Crittenden County has a population of about 50,902, according to the US Census Bureau. The county seat is Marion; however, the largest city is West Memphis. Crittenden County is Arkansas’s twelfth county, formed October 22, 1825, and named for Robert Crittenden, the first Secretary of the Arkansas Territory. Crittenden County is part of the Memphis, TN–MS–AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Most of the county’s media comes from Memphis, although some Little Rock TV (Arkansas Educational Television Network, KATV) is imported by Comcast Cable. It lies within Arkansas’s 1st congressional district. The total square miles of the county are 636, 610 of that is land, and the remaining 27 square miles is water. The nationally protected, Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge is inside the county lines and the county is bordered by two Tennessee counties, Tipton and Shelby to the east, and two Mississippi counties, to the south (Tunica) and southwest (DeSoto). The remaining neighboring Arkansas counties include: Mississippi to the northeast, Lee to the southwest, St. Francis, and Cross to the west and Poinsett to the northwest. The Circuit Clerk is Terry Hawkins, and her primary duties of the Circuit Court Clerk office revolve around filing, docketing, attending court, issuing of notices, records management, and reporting to the Administrative Office of the Courts. It is the responsibility of the Circuit Clerk to prepare a list of prospective jurors, docket cases of the respective courts, issue summonses, subpoenas, writs and warrants related to each case, attend court and swear witnesses. The Clerk maintains the records of the civil, criminal and Juvenile divisions of the Courts and prepares transcripts of proceedings under appeal. In addition, duties of the office in the capacity of Recorder include recording all deeds, mortgages, and conveyances of lands and buildings lying within the County, as well as maps and plats of newly laid out villages and all records from other counties concerning land sales or conveyance which affect title in the County. Other duties assigned the Recorder include the recording of powers of attorney, liens on real property, soldier’s discharges, leases, financing statements, performance bonds and public official bonds.
