Chicot County, Arkansas Overview
Located in the state of Arkansas, Chicot County has a population of about 11,800, according to the US Census Bureau. The county seat is Lake Village; however, Dermott is the largest community. Chicot County is Arkansas’s tenth county, formed on October 25, 1823, and named after Point Chicot on the Mississippi River. The name translates from the French to mean knobby because of the volume of cypress trees in the area. It is part of the Arkansas Delta, historically important for cotton cultivation. Landmarks in the county are: Lake Chicot, North America’s largest oxbow lake and Arkansas’s largest natural lake; the site of Charles Lindbergh’s first night-time flight; and the legendary burial site of Hernando De Soto, near Lake Village. The county has a total area of 691 square miles, most of which is land at 644 square miles and the remaining 47 is water. Before the Civil War, large plantations were part of the county. The Battle of Old River Lake was fought in the county. The area is border by some Mississippi counties, Washington to the north and Issaquena to the southeast. Two Louisiana counties border to the south (East Carroll Parish) and southwest (West Carroll Parish). The remaining counties are all in Arkansas, Desha County to the north, Ashley County to the west and Drew County to the northwest. The county is covered by six zip codes, with 71653 being the largest.
