Greenlee County, Arizona Overview

Located in the southeastern part of the state of Arizona, Greenlee County has a population of about 8,437, according to the US Census Bureau. The county seat is Clifton, which is also the largest community in the county. Its small population makes it the least populous county in the state. Greenlee County was created in 1909 and has a total area of 1,848 square miles 5.3 of which is water, and the remaining 1,843 square miles is land. The economy of Greenlee County predominately comes from Morenci Mine, which is the largest copper mining operation in North America, and one of the largest copper mines in the world. Cochise County is to the south of Greenlee, Graham County to the west, Apache County to the north and both the east and southeast borders on New Mexico’s Catron and Grant counties to the east and Hidalgo County to the southeast. The county is partially home to the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest and the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation area, both nationally protected parks.
