Graham County, Arizona Overview
Located in the southeastern part of the state of Arizona, Graham County has a population of about 37,220, according to the US Census Bureau. The county seat is Safford, which is also the largest community in the county. Its small population makes it the third least populous county in the state. Graham County was created in 1881 and has a total area of 4,641 square miles 19 of which is water, and the remaining 4,623 square miles is land. As part of the Safford, AZ Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the county is bordered by Cochise County to the south, Pima County to the southwest, Pinal County to the west, Gila County to the northwest, Navajo and Apache Counties to the north and Greenlee County to the east. Graham County is named after the mountain, which was named after Lt. Col James Duncan Graham. Graham was the first Arizona county to break the tradition of naming counties in honor of our Native Americans. A portion of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation is within the county limits, and portions of two nationally protected forests are also in the area. The clerk operates under the direction of the presiding court judge, the Honorable Michael D. Peterson. All documents filed in the court are docketed to track the records. While most records are public information, some remain confidential. The clerk has duties, which include, but are not limited to:
- Issuing jury summons, wage assignments, child support orders and address changes, and marriage licenses
- Gatekeeper to public access to the Superior Court judicial system
- Processing filing fees, bail bonds, service fees, appearance bonds, and court-ordered assessments for both juveniles and adults
- Processing passport applications, servers, and bail bondsmen
- Being present at all hearings to swear in witnesses, store exhibits and maintain an accurate record of the proceedings
- Acting as Jury Commissioner, who maintains the active jury list for the court
- Assisting public inquiries regarding child support processing
