Gila County is located in the state of Arizona, in the northeastern edge of the Sonoran Desert, and covers a wide variety of life zones, including pine forests, pinon-juniper, chaparral and high desert plains. The county was formed on February 8, 1881, from parts of Maricopa County and Pinal County. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 53,597 people and a total area of 4,795 square miles. The county seat is Globe.
Gila County borders the following counties: Yavapai County to the northwest, Maricopa County to the west, Pinal County to the south, Graham County to the southeast, Navajo County to the east and northeast, and Coconino County to the north.
Sadie Jo Bingham is the county’s recorder as of 2015; she was first elected to the position of Gila County Recorder in November of 2008. The duties of the county recorder are established by state law; the recorder’s office is responsible for maintaining county records and indexing documents presented to the office that are required, entitled, or authorized by law to be recorded.
