Dare County is located in the northeast region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Manteo. The county was founded in 1870 and named for the first child born in the Americas to English parents, Virginia Dare. The total area of the county is 1,563 square miles, only 383 of which are land. According to the 2010 census, there are 33,920 people living in the county. The bordering counties are Currituck County in the north, Tyrell County in the northwest, and Hyde County in the southwest.
